Verified: Legal Studies

June 1 through June 6

Designed for future lawyers and legal advocates, Verified: Legal Studies will expose participants to a wide range of career options. Participants will meet with professionals in criminal and civil rights law, political law, advocacy, and more. During this week-long experience, participants will learn how to craft briefs based on real cases, guided by real legal practitioners.

S. Douglas "Doug" Bunch is a Partner at Cohen Milstein Sellers & Toll PLLC, a member of the Securities Litigation & Investor Protection practice group, and Co-Chair of the firm’s Pro Bono Committee. In 2022, President Joseph R. Biden appointed Mr. Bunch to serve as Public Delegate of the United States to the United Nations.

As an attorney, Mr. Bunch represents public and private pension fund investors in securities and shareholder class actions. For his work, Mr. Bunch has been recognized by the industry and named to Lawdragon’s “500 Leading Plaintiff Financial Lawyers,” Benchmark Litigation’s “40 & Under Hot List,” and Law360’s “Rising Stars – Securities,” honoring lawyers under the age of 40 whose professional accomplishments transcend their age.

Mr. Bunch also plays a prolific role in empowering students and cultivating educational opportunity – nationally and globally. He is the co-founder and chairman of Global Playground, Inc., a nonprofit that builds schools and other educational infrastructure in the developing world, and he serves or has served on the boards of multiple other education nonprofits. Mr. Bunch has also twice been appointed, in 2016 and again in 2020, by governors of Virginia to the Board of Visitors of the College of William & Mary, the university’s governing board.

Mr. Bunch is also a leader in the Washington, D.C. LGBTQ+ community. He has acted as amicus curiae counsel to Equality Virginia, the Commonwealth’s leading advocacy organization for LGBTQ+ equality, in filing amicus briefs in support of transgender students in Virginia public schools.

A member of Phi Beta Kappa, Mr. Bunch graduated with a B.A., summa cum laude, from the College of William & Mary, earned an Ed.M. from Harvard University’s Graduate School of Education, and received his J.D. from William & Mary Law School, where he was a recipient of the Benjamin Rush Medal in 2006. In 2011, he was awarded William & Mary Law School’s inaugural W. Taylor Reveley III award, recognizing alumni who have demonstrated a sustained commitment to public service.

Mr. Bunch is a native of Augusta County, in Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley.

Paralegal at Cohen Milstein Sellers & Toll PLLC

Sean Nguyen is a securities paralegal at Cohen Milstein Sellers & Toll PLLC and will attend New York University School of Law in the fall. At Cohen Milstein, Sean advocates for regulatory compliance while supporting plaintiffs in complex securities litigation.

Sean, a Monroe Scholar, graduated summa cum laude from William & Mary in 2024 with a B.A. in Public Policy and History. Fellowships enriched Sean’s experiences there. As a Freeman Intern Fellow in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, Sean interviewed Kazakh minority members to evaluate the impact of government policies on ethnic coexistence. In Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, he investigated consumer distrust in mobile payment systems during his Global Research Institute Summer Fellowship.

Other professional experiences include a judicial internship with Minnesota’s 4th District Court, policy analysis at the U.S. State Department, and global development research at AidData and DIGLab. Outside work, Sean enjoys community volunteering, playing pick-up basketball and pickleball, and staying informed through daily podcasts. He aims to use his legal education and service-minded character to build pathways of equal opportunity.

As someone who graduated less than a year ago, Sean knows just how impactful a program like this can be. He is excited to help others uncover the many opportunities waiting for them in the legal field!
