How do governments use social media to persuade citizens of other countries? To answer this question this class will take a media ecology approach that examines both US social media platforms (such as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and Instagram) and those based abroad (such as VK and Weibo). We’ll also compare the practices of five kinds of participants: diplomats, journalists, activists, influencers, and trolls. Using the resources of government agencies, think tanks, museums, and archives in Washington DC, we’ll also explore research questions about regulation and censorship.
