AI and Honor Code Advice for Faculty

AI is a fast-evolving resource that has the potential to create confusion among students. We encourage you to emphasize the following points in your guidance to students:

As with all resources, the individual instructor determines what resources are permitted for use in completing assignments for their courses. The university does not have a one-size-fits-all AI policy. It’s important to carefully outline assignment instructions on the course syllabus.

  • If you have not explicitly authorized use of generative AI in completion of an assignment, inform students that they should consider AI to be an unauthorized resource.
  • Use of unauthorized resources may be considered an Honor Code violation, and we encourage you to report such matters to the Honor Council.
  • As adult learners, the onus is on students to clarify any perceived ambiguity regarding whether, and to what extent, AI is permitted on individual assignments. Encourage students to ask you clarifying questions prior to completing the assignment.
  • Share with students that AI output can be unreliable. When use of AI is permitted, encourage students to use the Studio for Teaching & Learning Innovation’s Evaluating AI Outputs Using Lateral Reading Strategies. This document provides a helpful checklist to verify the accuracy and reliability of AI output.
