Student Conduct Hearing Procedures

Procedures

The chair oversees the proceeding and generally proceeds as follows:

  • The Chair introduces the members of the Panel and summarizes any special situations pertinent to the case or the proceeding.
  • The Chair shares the student's response to the allegations ("responsible" or "not responsible")
  • The case administrator reviews the allegations and provides a general overview of the matter.
  • The student provides their perspective.
  • The Chair calls in any witnesses and the panel offers questions to the witnesses. The case administrator, the panel, and the student then can ask questions of the witnesses.
  • The case administrator and the student present brief summary remarks.
  • The panel determines whether the student is responsible for the allegations in private.

Sanctions Proceeding

Following the finding of responsibility on at least one allegation, the panel will, time permitted, move immediately into the Sanctions Phase of the process:

  • The staff member provides the student's prior student conduct and/or honor code record, if any.
  • The panel may question the student regarding the facts and circumstances of the violation and any relevant factors that may have affected the student at the time of the violation.
  • The staff member recommends a sanction to the panel and any associated rationale for the recommendations.
  •  The panel then convenes in private to determine the appropriate sanctions to recommend to SARP (the Director of SARP has final authority to determine sanctions)

After the Panel

  • A SARP staff member notifies the student of the sanctions, typically within two working days.
