Parking Advisory - Homecoming Weekend & Commencement Class of 2020

Full Description

As a follow up to Provost Agouris’ email from last week we provide this Parking Advisory to remind everyone Homecoming 2021 is upon us and there will be a variety of special events taking place that will impact parking in the center of campus. Below is an overview of areas that will be impacted as well as parking alternatives to help minimize the disruptions from October 6-9, 2021.

  •  Sep 28th ongoing through Friday Oct 8th:
    • The 9 curbside spaces along the lower end of James Blair Drive and the Crim Dell driveway will be reserved for contractor & vendor use. As the work begins to setup tents and other equipment within the Sunken Garden (SG). This may involve use of large flatbed and delivery trucks so please exercise caution when driving through this area.
  •  Wednesday, Oct 6th:
    • Starting at 2:00 pm, 30 spaces will be reserved in the School of Ed lot 6 to accommodate the WMF Meetings.
  • Thursday, Oct 7th
    • Starting at 7:30 am 30 spaces will be reserved in the School of Ed lot 6 to accommodate the WMF Meetings.
    • 15 Spaces on Alumni Dr will be reserved all day for Homecoming Registration
    • At 12:00pm 15 Spaces in Dawson Circle will be reserved for the Dean of A&S Leadership Council Mtg
    • Parking demand will gradually increase in the core of campus as the day goes on, at 1:00 pm demand shifts to Old Dominion lot & James Blair Dr to support the OWJ Board Meeting & Reception, and in the early evening the uppermost areas along James Blair Drive near the K&Q Gate will be reserved
    • 50 parking spaces have been leased for displaced F/S use in the First Baptist Church Lot on Scotland St
  •  Friday, Oct 8th:
    • Starting at 7:30 am 30 spaces will be reserved in the School of Ed lot 6 to accommodate the WMF Meetings
    • Demand increases all day in the core of campus. Areas near the Alumni House, Old Dominion & James Blair lots and most spaces along James Blair Drive will carry special event reservations, vendor and setup activity will increase in preparation for the events in the Sunken Garden
    • At 8:00 am 15 Spaces in Dawson Circle will be reserved for the Dean of A&S Leadership Council Mtg
    • At 1:00 pm demand shifts to Old Dominion lot, James Blair Dr, and 75 spaces in Kaplan Arena Lots will be set aside to support the Scholarship Luncheon, and in the evening the uppermost areas along James Blair Drive near the K&Q Gate will be reserved to support the Sunset Ceremony
    • We expect increased traffic associated with Homecoming will be felt across campus. However there are no planned road closures since there will not be a Homecoming Parade.
    • Continue use of the 50 F/S parking spaces leased in the First Baptist Church Lot on Scotland St
  • Saturday, Oct 9th:
    • The day starts with Football parking (The Zable Stadium lot, Rear Sadler Center lot, Old Dominion lot, Camm Lot, Yates-Randolph lot, James Blair lot and spaces on James Blair Drive, the Compton Lot, the Kaplan Arena Upper & Lower lots, Rear GGV lots, Harrison Ave, and the designated and signed spaces on College Terrace, Bright St, and Dawson Circle) will all be cleared beginning at 7:00 a.m. Additional Special event reservations will be posted beyond the areas reserved for football and will follow the game to support the All Alumni Tailgates, YG Party, Class parties and Saturday Night Bash in the SG and many more smaller events on campus.
  • Sunday Oct 10th:
    • There are no Homecoming related parking reservations on this day. Instead all parking areas surrounding the Kaplan Arena will be set aside to support the Class of 2020 Commencement Ceremonies.  These ceremonies will bring approximately 3,500-4,000 participants to campus and given that we already have a full campus we need every available space to accommodate the load. Different from any other year is that the 1,250 graduates are no longer residing and parking on campus, they too are above the existing demand on campus.

Please don’t hesitate to contact Parking and Transportation Services via email at parked@wm.edu if you have any questions or concerns.

The Master HC flow provides a visual representation of all the set asides for this period, and the Commencement Parking Map denotes the areas in use Sunday.
