Brandon Heroux '12 selected as CAA's overall male scholar-athlete of the year

The honors continue to roll in for recent William & Mary graduate Brandon Heroux '12, who was selected as the Colonial Athletic Association's Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year on Monday. The award is the third CAA Scholar-Athlete of the Year award for Heroux, including his selections as the Men's Track and Field winner in 2010 and 2012.

Brandon Heroux '12Each of the CAA's 10 men's sports (other than football) and 12 women's sports selects a Scholar-Athlete of the Year for that sport, and from those winners, one man and one woman are selected as the overall Scholar-Athlete of the Year.  Heroux is the fifth Tribesman to be selected as the conference's top academic and athletic performer, joining Adam Hess '04 (2003-04 basketball), Keith Bechtol '07 (2006-07 cross country and track), Ryan Overdevest '08 (2007-08 soccer), and Nathaniel Baako '11 (2010-11 soccer) as previous winners.

Heroux, who graduated in May with a degree in finance, capped off his four years by earning first-team All-America honors at the NCAA Championships earlier this month.  He threw a school-record 73.55 meters (241-4) in the finals of the javelin to take eighth overall and become W&M's first outdoor field All-American since 1935.  Heroux also won his fourth-straight CAA title in the javelin with a conference-record throw of 71.34m (234-1), becoming the first athlete in conference history to win the javelin four years in a row.  He also took sixth at the Canadian Olympic Trials over the weekend.

Heroux will next compete in one week, at the NACAC U-23 Championships in Irajuato, Mexico.  The men's javelin is scheduled for 7 p.m. (Eastern) on Friday, July 6.  Heroux is the second Tribe athlete to compete at the U-23 championships, joining Harry Miller '09 who ran the 3,000m steeplechase for the U.S. in 2008.
