W&M athletics department recognized for strong academic work
The NCAA first released APR data in 2005, but didn't start officially recognizing teams until the following year. In the five years since, the College has had a total of 42 team recognized for academic excellence.
The Tribe teams recognized are football, men's and women's gymnastics, women's basketball and volleyball. Four of these squads (excluding women's basketball) have been recognized in each of the previous five years. The Tribe's total was the most among full-time members of the Colonial Athletic Association and was one of four school's recognized in the football league.
"Our success in producing well-rounded student-athletes continues to be a source of pride for all involved with the athletics department and the William & Mary community" said Tribe Athletics Director Terry Driscoll. "That we continue to have success is testament to commitment that our student-athletes, coaches and administrators to the William & Mary tradition of pursuing of excellence in their academic and athletic lives."
The Academic Progress Rate is a measurement of a program's academic performance based on academic eligibility, retention, and graduation of student-athletes. A rate of 925, out of a highest possible score of 1000, equates to an approximate graduation rate of 60 percent and will be used as the threshold for future program evaluations.
