Utility project moves forward

Progress continues on a multi-year utility project to replace the College’s outdated heating and cooling systems. Members of the William & Mary community as well as local residents can stay updated on Historic Campus Utility Project by following the College’s construction website.
“We appreciate the community’s understanding and patience as we move forward with this badly needed project to replace utility systems installed in 1947 and 1950,” said Vice President for Administration Anna Martin. “Ultimately, this will replace heating and cooling systems that support 27 buildings on the historic and old campuses.”
The project is being done in two major segments, Martin added. The first segment, which was completed in the summer 2010, consisted of renovation of the steam plant and the addition of the cooling plant behind Trinkle Hall. The second segment will be accomplished in two phases. Phase one, which began this summer, will be completed during the 2010-11 academic year and includes installation of new steam/chilled water distribution lines to 11 buildings. The second phase of the project will install lines to the remaining 16 buildings.
Part of the project requires the installation of temporary steam pipes near Ewell Circle near Richmond Road, Martin said. Those pipes will be removed by early 2011, she said and added that parking spaces in the Ewell lot will be restored this month. Parking spaces in the Tucker Hall area will be restored in late winter, Martin said.
