Shawn Boyer '94 was named Virginia Business Person of the Year by Virginia Business magazine this month. Virginia Business gives the award annually to people who have transformed their companies, their industries or the state’s economy.
Boyer, who majored in business administration, was recognized for SnagAJob.com, a job search site for hourly employment he founded in 1999. The site is for both job seekers and employers and has seen phenomenal success in its first decade. Virginia Business reported the company is the fifth-largest online job recruiter with annual revenues totally $20 million.
Boyer, a graduate of Lafayette High School as well as William & Mary, came back to Williamsburg to start the company with the support of family and friends. The Boyer family name is well known in the community, his parents own the local jewelry retailer Boyer’s Diamond & Gold Source. SnagAJob later relocated to Glenn Allen, Va., just outside of Richmond, and now employs a staff of over 130.
Despite the recession, 2009 has been good to the company. In addition to the Virginia Business award, SnagAJob recently earned the number three spot on the Society of Human Resource Management’s list of “Best Small & Medium Companies to Work for in America” for the second year in a row.
