W&M takes 10th first-place win at National Deloitte Tax Case

The undergraduate team from the Mason School of Business at the College of William and Mary brought home an unprecedented 10th first-place win in the National Deloitte Tax Case Challenge. The competition was held Nov. 21-23, 2008 in Orlando, Fla.

The graduate team received an honorable mention.

The W&M undergraduate team has participated in the Tax Case Challenge for 15 years, and with this 10th first-place win, it surpasses all the other teams in first-place victories.

The graduate team began participating ten years ago and has qualified for the National Competition eight times. To date, the graduate team has won the competition twice and honorable mention six times.

For the competition, student teams must complete a complex theoretical case study that requires them to analyze information, identify data issues and consider alternative tax treatments for a fictitious client situation all in just five hours. Teams prepare a written solution to their cases and submit them to a panel of judges for evaluation.

Joseph Allen, Ryan Forester, Donald Holzinger and Grant Van Kirk were on the undergraduate team; Mary Altum, John Barlow, KerriAnne Quimby and Vanessa Rowan were on the graduate team.

Lawrence Pulley, dean of the Mason School of Business, said, “Once again, they have made us very proud, indeed, and have brought well-deserved public recognition to our students, faculty, and programs.”
