Cristina Klee specializes in American art and material culture, with an emphasis on the early 19th century. Her research has focused on the social and political implications of antebellum print culture and genre painting and on cultural interpretations of colonial portraiture. Klee takes an interdisciplinary approach to American art and visual culture, with an interest in decorative arts and domestic goods in addition to traditional painting. She earned a PhD from the University of Delaware, an MA from George Washington University, and a BA from Middlebury College. She has held fellowships from the Smithsonian American Art Museum; the Winterthur Museum & Library; and the Terra Foundation for the Arts/ACLS. Klee has taught art history at the University of Delaware, Christopher Newport University, and the College of William & Mary. She joined NIAHD as Program Coordinator in January 2023.
