Reflections on Teaching for NIAHD

from Jessica Brabble, Summer 2024 & 2025

When I first taught for NIAHD in Summer 2024, I wasn't sure what to expect. Fitting an entire crash course about the events that led to the Civil War into three weeks seemed daunting—especially in front of a group of high schoolers. I very quickly learned that I had nothing to worry about. The students, RTAs, and staff of NIAHD all made the experience incredibly rewarding. With each site visit and discussion section, I could see students making connections between past and present and forging friendships with one another. At the same time, I found myself growing in my confidence as an instructor and leader.

Teaching for NIAHD has been one of the most rewarding parts of my time at William & Mary. From the connections I've made to the chance to see students grow in their confidence, NIAHD has offered me the incredible opportunity to become a better professor and scholar. While it is no doubt a whirlwind of a three weeks, I am forever grateful for the opportunity to teach for a program like NIAHD.
