William & Mary Cyber Teams close out 2024 Ranked 6th in the Nation

NCL-Cyber

Closing out an amazing 2024 season, William & Mary’s undergraduate cyber teams earned a Power Ranking of 6th in the nation as published by the National Cyber League (NCL) results from the Fall 2024 season.   Graduate students in the Experienced Students Bracket earned a spot on the leaderboard ranked 27th. NCL is a cybersecurity skills competition with over 550 colleges and universities competing for a place of honor on the national leaderboard to top 100 institutions:  https://cyberskyline.com/data/power-ranking/fall-2024-national

The competition recognizes the skills, leadership, and abilities of competitors and demonstrates to potential employers our student’s readiness for a professional cybersecurity career.  Professor Matthew Chapman, William & Mary’s team coach of Tribe Cyber, highlighted the amazing talent and initiative of the William & Mary students.

“I never cease to be amazed by the raw talent, motivation, and initiative of our students.  Our undergraduate team this year earned our campus a spot in the top ten nationally in only our second year in the competition; Nicolas Janis, Walker Knapp, Lily Gloudemans, Matthew Esposito, Marshall Wright, Zachary Bowden, and Alex Phan.  As a senior cybersecurity professional, I would hire these students in a second.  Not only because of their potential to protect our nation’s critical services from cyber-attacks, but also because they are just fun, fantastic people to work with.”

The format of the NCL includes both individual and team competitions across nine major cybersecurity categories: open-source intelligence,  cryptography, log analysis, network traffic analysis, scanning, forensics, password cracking, enumeration and exploitation, and web application security.

The university leadership and Tribe Cyber teams were recognized by both the NCL Commissioner, Dr. David Zeichick, and the CEO of Cyber Skyline, Franz Payer, for their prestigious efforts during the NCL Fall 2024 competition season.

“We had over a hundred William & Mary students participating in NCL this season.  Even as a beginner, it is a great opportunity to learn a bit about cybersecurity.  Everyone is welcome to jump in.  W&M students, please feel free to send me a note or stop by my office. It really is a fun competition,” highlighted Chapman.
