Pre-Vet Advising

GRE-related courses
Many Veterinary Schools require the GRE for admission. The GRE is broken down into three
main sections:

Analytical Writing (1 Section)
- Tests ability to evaluate arguments and articulate complex ideas through writing.

Verbal Reasoning (2 Sections)
- Tests reading comprehension, critical reasoning, and text completions/sentence
equivalence

Quantitative Reasoning (2 Sections)
- Covers basic mathematical concepts (algebra, geometry, data interpretation)

The following set of courses are required for most Veterinary Schools:

Biology (3 courses with 2 associated labs)
- BIOL 203/BIO 203L and,
- BIOL 204/BIOL 204L
- BIOL 306

Chemistry (5 courses with associated labs):
- CHEM 103/CHEM 103L and,
- CHEM 208/254
- CHEM 206/206L and,
- CHEM 209/253 or CHEM 207/CHEM 253
- CHEM 314

English (2 courses)
- COLL 150 will usually count as 1 English course
- An additional English course in literature or composition

Physics (2 courses with lab)
- PHYS 101/PHYS 101L
- PHYS 102/PHYS 102L

Additionally, the following courses are required for many/some, but not all Veterinary schools:

Anatomy & Physiology (2 courses, labs recommended)
- HHP 210/ HHP 210L
- HHP 320 /HHP 320L

Upper Level Biology (Varies by school)
- Courses in Animal Science/Behavior are recommended
- A course in Genetics is required by some programs

Statistics (1 course)
- MATH 106, PSYC 301, BIOL 327, or HHP 300
- 1 semester of calculus may also be required depending on school.

Public Speaking (1 course)*
- SPCH 201

Medical Terminology (1 course)*
- HHP 314

Humanities and Social Sciences (Varies by school)

*Please note, these are required by VMCVM

*Note that many vet schools require a grade of at least a “C” in core courses. All core courses
must be taken for a grade and not P/F
