The Federal agencies and export control regulations most commonly associated with research activity at academic institutions in the US are listed below.  Please note that violations of these export control regulations can lead to significant civil and criminal penalties.

  • International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR)
  • The ITAR regulations cover defense articles and services, meaning items and information specifically designed or adapted for military use.
• United States Department of Commerce (Bureau of Industry and Security)
  • Export Administration Regulations (EAR)
  • The EAR regulations cover dual-use items and are much broader than the ITAR regulations.
