Revolution Untold
Revolution Untold is a public history initiative tied to the nation's 250th anniversary, developed in partnership with the City of Williamsburg and driven by original research from W&M students. Rather than rehearsing the familiar arc of Founders, battles, and documents, the project centers the people whose revolutionary experiences have been marginalized: Indigenous nations navigating shifting alliances and sovereignty crises, enslaved and free Black people negotiating impossible choices between competing imperial powers, women whose political and economic labor sustained the war effort, and working-class colonists whose motivations rarely fit the tidy narrative of liberty and tyranny.
Student researchers sit at the heart of the work. W&M students conduct the archival and interpretive research that surfaces these overlooked stories, and the partnership with the City of Williamsburg grounds the project in the physical and civic landscape where much of this history actually unfolded, giving the scholarship a public audience and a hometown stake.
Revolution Untold is generously sponsored by the Society of 1918 at William & Mary and the Williamsburg 250 Commission, and is made possible in part by a grant from VA250 Commission in partnership with Virginia Humanities.
