Early Music CD Available

W&M Early Music Ensemble's latest CDThe W&M Early Music Ensemble has released a new CD featuring music of Bach and Handel, performed on period instruments in area period buildings by students of the College of William & Mary.

Works include Bach's 5th Brandenburg Concerto, four trio sonatas by Bach and Handel (listen to a sample of Handel's Trio Sonata in F major, Op.2, No.4) and portions of Bach's Musical Offering.  The ensemble is directed by Prof. Ruth van Baak Griffioen, who also performs alongside the students on the recording. The beautiful harpsichord images on the CD are taken from the studio harpsichord of Prof. Tom Marshall, who also trained the harpsichordists who perform on the recording.

The performances on the CD were recorded in the Wren Chapel and live at Bruton Parish Church at the Early Music Ensemble's spring concert. Students perform on period instruments such as baroque violin, baroque flute, viola da gamba, recorder, and harpsichord.  One of the students, Nick Fitzgerald, '09, actually plays on an authentic (rather than the more usual reproduction) period instrument, a German violin crafted around 1760.
