ISSP Scholarships

The Office of International Students, Scholars, and Programs (ISSP) has some limited funds from which it provides scholarships and need-based financial aid to international students at W&M.  These funds help us support students in need, enable educational experiences, and recognize the contributions of our international student community. 

General eligibility criteria for ISSP scholarships and aid:

  • Degree-seeking graduate or undergraduate student, enrolled and in good standing at W&M.
  • Valid F-1 or J-1 non-immigrant status.

ISSP Scholarship and Aid Opportunities


1. International Student Financial Hardship Aid

Purpose: To support a student with acute financial need due that arose from circumstances outside his/her control (e.g. loss of parental or sponsor support, devaluation of currency, high medical costs, etc).

Amount: Maximum $1500 

Process:

  • Student submits the International Student Financial Hardship Aid Application Form along with supporting documentation to evidence his/her request.
    • Examples of supporting evidence include a letter from the sponsor, medical bills, etc.
  • Applications are reviewed by the scholarship committee on a rolling basis (i.e. applications are accepted throughout the year).
  • Student will be notified by email of award. He/she will be required to sign an acceptance form and write a letter of appreciation prior to distribution of funds.

2. International Student Opportunity Scholarship

Purpose: Enable degree-seeking international students to participate in special opportunities (e.g. an unpaid internship, attend a conference, etc).

Amount: $500

Process:

  • Student submits the International Student Opportunity Scholarship Application Form along with any applicable supporting documentation to evidence his/her request. 
    • Examples of supporting documentation include conference registration, internship offer, etc.
  • Application deadline: Nov 1 for Winter/Spring semester; April 1 for Summer/Fall semester
  • Applications are reviewed by the scholarship committee and decisions rendered by April 15.
  • Student will be notified by email of award. He/she will be required to sign an acceptance form and write a letter of appreciation prior to distribution of funds.

3. International Student Achievement Award - Nominated

Purpose: To recognize international students who have distinguished them selves in academics, service and leadership. Faculty and administrators nominate an international student for this award.

Amount: $500

Process:

  • W&M faculty or administrator submits the International Student Award Nomination Form to the Reves Center
  • Application deadline: April 15
  • Applications are reviewed by the scholarship committee and decisions rendered by April 15.
  • Nominator and Student will be notified by email of award. Student will be required to sign an acceptance form and write a letter of appreciation prior to distribution of funds.
  • Awards will be presented at the International Reception in May
