International Student Scholarships

The generosity of our donors and alumni make it possible for the Reves Center to help W&M attract and support the best and brightest students from around the world! These funds help us support students in need, make educational opportunities possible, and recognize the contributions of our international student community.

International Student Scholarships and aid are awarded through the following funds and scholarship programs:

  • International Student Scholarship Fund: Merit and need based awards for international graduate and undergraduate students.
  • Blakey Scholarship: Awarded to incoming international undergraduates. The goal of this scholarship is to help attract students of underrepresented areas of the world to W&M.
  • Hixon Family Scholarship: Need based scholarship to support students who are residents of African countries. It includes a full scholarship for an undergraduate student as well as funds to support educational opportunities (e.g. attend a conference, take summer classes) for other students who are resident of Africa.
  • Lillelund Scholarship: Merit and need based awards for international undergraduate students. Scholarship is available starting Fall 2019.
  • McLeod Scholarship Merit and need based awards for international graduate and undergraduate students who are residents of Australia, New Zealand, and Canada.
  • Tepper ScholarshipMerit and need based awards for international graduate and undergraduate students, who are residents of Russia, Eastern European countries, and former Soviet republics.
  • Jack Wolfe Scholarship: Merit and need based awards for international graduate and undergraduate students.

Types of ISSP Scholarship and Aid Opportunities
 
  1. Global Student Community
    1. Purpose: To help attract the best and brightest students from around the world to W&M. 
    2. Amount: Varies
    3. Process: Awarded through the admissions process.

  2. International Student Financial Hardship Aid
    1. Purpose: To support a current student with acute financial need due that arose from circumstances outside his/her control (e.g. loss of parental or sponsor support, devaluation of currency, high medical costs, etc).
    2. Amount: Maximum $1000 
    3. Process:
      • Student submits the International Student Financial Hardship Aid Application Form along with supporting documentation to evidence his/her request. Examples of supporting evidence include a letter from the sponsor, medical bills, etc
      • Login to iStart using your W&M ID and Password
      • Click on International Office in the menu on the left-hand side. Then click on the International Student Hardship Aid Application and complete the form.
      • Applications are reviewed by the scholarship committee on a rolling basis (i.e. applications are accepted throughout the year).
      • Student will be notified by email of award and will be required to sign an acceptance form and write a letter of appreciation prior to distribution of funds.
      • Funds are distributed as a reimbursement, direct pay of costs, or applied to tuition.

  3. International Student Opportunity Award
    1. Purpose: Enable international students to participate in special opportunities (e.g. an unpaid internship, attend a conference, etc).
    2. Amount: Typically up to $500
    3. Process:
      • Login to iStart using your W&M ID and Password
      • Click on International Office in the menu on the left-hand side. Then click on International Student Opportunity Award and complete the form.

      • Application deadline: November 10 for opportunities taking place between November 2017-June 2018; March 1 for opportunities taking place between May 2018-December 2018.

      • Applications are reviewed by the scholarship committee and decisions rendered by November 15 and March 15.

      • Student will be notified by email of award and will be required to sign an acceptance form and write a letter of appreciation prior to distribution of funds.

      • Funds are distributed as a reimbursement, direct pay of costs, or applied to tuition.

  4. International Student Achievement Award - Nominated
    1. Purpose: To recognize international students who have distinguished themselves in academics, service and leadership. Faculty and administrators nominate an international student for this award. Five awards are given per year.
    2. Amount: $500
    3. Process:
      • W&M faculty or administrator submits the International Student Award Nomination Form to the Reves Center.
      • We begin accepting applications on February 1. The application deadline is March 1.
      • Applications are reviewed by the scholarship committee and decisions rendered by March 15.
      • Nominator and Student will be notified by email of award. Student will be required to sign an acceptance form and write a letter of appreciation prior to distribution of funds.
