Stuck in the Penalty Box

If a computer is virus-infected or detected producing malicious traffic on the William & Mary network, the computer will be placed in the "Penalty Box." The Penalty Box is a VLAN (virtual local area network) on the W&M Network. This restricted network only allows access to sites needed for operating system and virus updates. If a user attempts to use a computer that is restricted to the Penalty Box, the user will see a message stating the problem (if we can identify it). The owner of a computer owned and managed by William & Mary will be contacted by Security or Technology Support personnel. Users with personal devices may choose one of two options:

The Technology Support Center does not provide virus removal services, but may provide some guidance on how to clean the computer.

Take the computer to an off-site vendor.

Once cleaned, the user should call the TSC to affirm that the computer is cleaned and request reconnection to the W&M network. Computers that are frequently placed in the Penalty Box may be permanently removed from the W&M Network.
