The Department regularly employs undergraduate students to assist in the teaching and grading of laboratories, as well as to assist in the administration of courses (grading and bookkeeping). Such opportunities provide for the development of communication skills and are good preparations for those planning to pursue graduate studies where one or two semesters of teaching are usually mandatory. Information and applications for teaching assistant and grading positions are posted outside the Laboratory Technician’s office at ISC 1037 after fall break and after spring break for the upcoming semesters.
Students also have the opportunity to become tutors. At the beginning of each semester, the Chemistry Office compiles a list of chemistry majors who would like to be tutors for W&M and local high school students. As a tutor, you schedule the contact times and negotiate the hourly rate paid by the students directly.
