Service Requirements

Training is an important aspect of quality youth development and education work. In order to ensure that all of our volunteers are supported and the young people that we serve are safe and healthy, we require the following trainings to be completed BEFORE all volunteers begin serving. In the fall semester, our target start date is October 1st, while the spring semester has a target start date of the first full week in February. Deadlines for completing onboarding trainings are set prior to the start of each semester.

Are You A New Member?

As a new member, you must meet the initial requirements:

Onboarding Requirements
  • “OCE’s Education & Youth Development Onboarding Training” on Blackboard which includes trainings on: Engaging in Meaningful Relationships, Mandated Reporter Protocols, and FERPA Regulations. Once you have sign up for a shift, you will be enrolled in this course. Please complete by the deadline.
  • Virginia Department of Social Services’ “Recognizing & Reporting Child Abuse & Neglect” (CWSE 5692). If you are an education major and have taken (CWSE 5691), we will accept that certificate as well.
  • Background Check. An email will be sent from TruScreen to your email to confirm the start of the background check. Please check your junk mail.
Shift Updates and Sign Ups

Please add us on GivePulse in order to see when new shifts are added to sign up. We use this to keep track of your attendance, service requirement fulfillment, and your impacts. In addition, you will not be able to see the shifts unless you are a member, so be sure to click "Join"!

Semesterly and Program Requirements

To remain up-to date and supported, all GSP members are required to atend one (1) training and one (1) issue education each semester. We offer both virtual and in-person opportunities. Relevant opportunities offered by the School of Education, other W&M offices, or the community at-large can also be accepted. However, they must be approved prior to the event.

Just as each program has a different focus, each program will have its own training requirements. Please see your Program Coordinator, Site Lead or Ed & YD Advisors.

Volunteering BEGINS

*Individuals who sign up for a shift by the Priority Deadline will have a slot on their chosen shift secured. To maintain your shift, you must complete your onboarding requirements (training and background check) by the Priority Training Deadline. Otherwise, individuals on the waitlist who have completed their Onboarding Rrequirements will replace those who signed up for a shift but did not complete their Onboarding Requirements.

NOTE: When you sign up for a shift, you are also applying to be a member.

**Individuals who have completed training will have their shifts confirmed. Should we have individuals on the waiting list who have completed their requirements, they will receive a slot over those who have signed up for a shift and not completed their requirements (trainings and background check).

Those who have not completed their training will have their shift confirmed only once they have completed their requirements (trainings and background check). Please note that, at this point, it is possible that you may not receive your first choice.

All shifts will be confirmed following the training deadline.
