Collapsible lists for Academic and Conduct Requirements
Academic Requirements

The Interfraternity Council has established minimum GPA eligibility requirements to join its member fraternities at a 2.5 cumulative GPA. If a student is in their first semester at William & Mary, it is assumed the student meets the minimum GPA requirement.

An IFC Fraternity may have minimum GPA requirements above the eligibility requirements established by the Interfraternity Council. Each potential new member should ask about individual chapter GPA requirements during recruitment. Chapters will be notified if a potential new member does or does not meet IFC and/or chapter standards, but the individual's GPA will not be shared.

If a student does not meet IFC established GPA requirements, the student may petition the IFC Conduct Board for an exemption. A student must be receiving a bid for membership from an IFC Fraternity to petition. Petitions may not be submitted until a chapter has indicated they are willing to sponsor a student petition. Petitions for men seeking to join a fraternity this semester will be due by Sunday, September 15 and should be sent to ifc@wm.edu. Petitioners will need to attend the IFC Conduct Board meeting the following evening. The petitioner will be sent a confirmation email with details of the Conduct Board meeting.
Conduct Requirement

In 2018, the Interfraternity Council adopted conduct standards for students to receive a bid for membership from an IFC fraternity. The IFC Constitution and By-laws states:“Undergraduate men are ineligible to pledge a fraternity if they are currently on disciplinary probation or deferred suspension status or if they have a case pending involving possible violation of the Sexual Misconduct Policy or another serious student conduct matter. Additionally, any previously issued disciplinary suspension shall deem the student ineligible to join a fraternity. By submitting a recruitment registration, the potential member is consenting to a search of university records by Community Values & Restorative Practices and to their disclosure of any potential members who have a disqualifying record.

During the recruitment registration period, undergraduate men will be afforded the opportunity to self-disclose any conduct history while attending William & Mary or previous institution in the case of a transfer student. In addition, students will be asked to consent to a review of their William & Mary Conduct Record in order to determine eligibility. The details of the record WILL NOT be released to anyone beyond Community Values & Restorative Practices. The only information that will be communicated to chapters is if the potential new member meets or does not meet the eligibility standard above. In such a case, the prospective member may not join a chapter until his petition is accepted and the chapter is notified.

The IFC Conduct Board, as well as the Vice President of Recruitment will vote on the petition and inform the prospective member and the chapter of the decision immediately after it is made. The petition form is the same as the GPA waiver petition and will be released in February.
