Jinghong Zhang

Dr. Jinghong Zhang is a historian of modern China. She received her Ph.D. from the University of California, Santa Cruz in 2023 and holds an MA from the University of Manchester in the United Kingdom. Zhang was born and raised in southwest China. Her research interests include the social and cultural history of modern China, the history of medicine, gender history, and Science and Technology Studies (STS). She is currently working on a book manuscript tentatively titled Down to the Roots: The History of Dentistry and Oral Hygiene in Modern China, which is the very first historical monograph that examines the social and cultural history of teeth, dentistry, and oral hygiene in China from the late imperial era to contemporary times. Zhang's research has been supported by the Association for Asian Studies, the D. Kim Foundation, the Social Science Research Council, the University of California,  and others.

At William & Mary, Zhang teaches courses on modern East Asia, modern China, gender and sexuality, and Chinese culture.
