Eligibility

College-wide rules state that to be eligible for Honors, students must have a 3.0 cumulative QPA or a 3.0 QPA in junior-year courses.  The Classical Studies department, however, has additional standards that are somewhat more stringent.  In most cases, students admitted to honors in Classical Studies are majors in the department (in any of our four concentrations) who have already completed a significant amount of work in departmental courses. You are required to have a minimum overall QPA of 3.3 and a minimum QPA of 3.65 in the major.

Students interested in doing an Honors thesis should submit a prospectus and a writing sample to their prospective Honors Thesis advisor.

Exceptions to the departmental requirements (but not the college-wide requirements) can be negotiated in extraordinary circumstances: ask your advisor or the department chair if you are uncertain about whether you qualify.

Also keep in mind that your ability to pursue honors is contingent on your finding a faculty member who is willing and able to work with you as honors advisor. We encourage students to do honors, and will try to accommodate all qualified students who express an interest, but a number of factors including staff availability and teaching loads will make it impossible from time to time to fulfill all requests.
