Federal Emergency Grant funding at William & Mary

Summary

The Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act, CRRSA (HEERF II), and the American Rescue Plan (HEERF III) allocated federal money to higher education for emergency grants to students to help cover expenses related to the disruption of campus operations due to coronavirus. William & Mary has been allocated $1.97 million in each type of grant for disbursement to students.

Full Description

In an effort to distribute emergency grants following federal guidance, William & Mary has allocated its federal dollars for tiered payments of $1,000 to students who are federal Pell Grant recipients and $500 to students who have already demonstrated financial need through the financial aid process. William & Mary reached out via email on May 7 to these students to complete a verification form by May 21 confirming their eligibility and that they incurred additional expenses as a result of the disruptions created by COVID-19. Payment will be made in early June by direct deposit or check. William & Mary elected to keep this process as simple as possible to make resources available to eligible students with the greatest need as quickly as possible.

The CARES Act requires that recipients of this federal aid meet all of the eligibility requirements for federal Title IV funds as undergraduate or as graduate or professional students.

Students who are not eligible for Title IV funds may still be eligible for support via private dollars raised for that purpose. Already William & Mary has provided roughly $80,000 in COVID-19 relief to students from the Health Emergency and Resources for the Tribe (HEART) Fund and other donor-funded sources, and we will continue to do so. Eligible categories for funding from the HEART Fund are food, transportation, lodging, healthcare and medications, and educational expenses.

The process of distributing these funds and other frequently asked questions are addressed on our CARES Act funding page.
