Information on Spring 2024 Referendum

Summary

Information about the referendum to be included on the Spring 2024 Student Assembly ballot.

Full Description

Every academic spring term during the Student Assembly’s elections, questions may be placed on the ballot for the student body to vote upon. There are three ways for a question to be posted on the ballot.

  • Student Assembly Senators vote for a question to be posted on the ballot under the legislative guidelines set forth in the Constitution of the Student Assembly.
  • The Vice-President of Student Affairs formally requests for the Student Senate to post a question.
  • OR 250 different students of The College of William and Mary sign and date an official Election’s Commission “Referendum Question Petition Form” and present it to the Election Commission.

For the spring 2024 spring election, Student Assembly received a petition signed by 301 students. Their referendum question shall be posed on the ballot that will be available on March 28th, 2024.

The submitted explanation by the petitioners for the referendum is as follows:

This referendum calls for The College of William & Mary to submit an audit of their endowment to determine the extent to which it is implicated in companies that uphold The State of Israel's system of apartheid and continued infliction of violence against Palestinians, and to immediately divest from such funds, as well as end institutional ties to such corporations.
