The Haven celebrates its 5th Anniversary this October!
Please join us October 19th during Homecoming weekend to celebrate five years of advocacy, support, and empowerment. This program will recognize current Haven volunteers and bring back past volunteers to celebrate their contribution to the William & Mary community and honor their extraordinary contribution to campus. Those attending will receive a special commemorative 5th Anniversary lapel pin. Refreshments will be served and we will be joined by special guests.
5th Anniversary Featured Speaker: Julia Canney ’16, MSc Human Rights
Julia Canney is a 2016 graduate of William & Mary, where she was a founding member of The Haven and the VP of Healthy Relationships/Sexual Aggression for Health Outreach Peer Educators (HOPE). After graduating from W&M, Julia earned her MSc Human Rights at University College Dublin, where her studies focused on gender, security and peace building. At UCD, she founded Consent at UCD, the first organization of its kind to work with the Students' Union to raise awareness on consent and healthy relationships among UCD's 33,000 student body. While in Dublin, Julia worked as a researcher with ActionAid Ireland's Women's Rights Programme and as a researcher with the Justice for Magdalenes Research Group, providing technical assistance and drafting for the submission of an official report to the Irish Government detailing abuses against women held in Magdalene Laundries and Mother and Baby Homes in 20th century Ireland.
Currently, Julia is a Senior Program Assistant for the Gender, Women and Democracy Team at the National Democratic Institute (NDI) in Washington, DC, where she works on programs promoting women's political participation across the globe. At NDI, Julia works on programming focused on violence against women in politics, masculinities, and democratic resilience in the Central and West Africa and Eurasia regions, specifically in the DRC, Nigeria, Georgia, and Ukraine. In 2018, Julia was one of two awardees of the 2018 'Beyond War' Reporting Fellowship from the Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting, for which she traveled to Northern Ireland during the 20th anniversary of the Good Friday Agreement to speak with women involved in peace building efforts.
About The Haven
The mission of The Haven is to produce a dynamic trauma-informed resource center at William & Mary for individuals affected by sexual violence, intimate partner violence, stalking and/or other gender-based discrimination to foster empowerment, autonomy, connection, and healing. The Haven is a peer-based confidential, welcoming and inclusive resource center for those impacted by sexual misconduct. It was established on campus in October of 2014 through a collaboration with the Dean of Students Office and William & Mary students who identified needed support and resources for members of our community. The establishment of The Haven was parallel to President Taylor Reveley’s creation of the Task Force for Preventing Sexual Assault and Harassment which was charged with assessing the scope of the problem on campus, the effectiveness of current prevention programming and strategies, determining best practices for faculty and staff training, and examining current practices for investigation and adjudicating allegations of sexual misconduct. Part of the Task Force recommendations that came out in June of 2015 was to increase staff capacity which lead to the hiring of a full-time Director of The Haven. The Director of The Haven started in February of 2016 which contributed to significant enhancements to the operation of The Haven.
