2019-20 priorities and a presentation of the university’s vision, mission and values statements

William & Mary President Katherine A. Rowe sent the following message to the university community Sept. 30, 2019. - Ed.

Dear William & Mary Community,

The 2019-20 academic year is well underway, and with it, strategic planning. As we chart William & Mary’s path for the decades ahead, I invite you to join us, in person or via livestream. Our next university-wide forum will be tomorrow at 3:30 p.m. EST, when we will reflect together about our shared vision, mission and values.

Because the change that matters most is change that advances what we value, we begin strategic planning by revisiting these anchors: our vision for W&M (the institution we aspire to be), our mission (how we realize our vision) and our values (who we strive to be in fulfilling our mission). Together, these three linked statements will guide us as we scan long-term challenges and opportunities this fall and set strategic priorities in the spring.

As is my practice following Board of Visitors meetings, let me take this opportunity also to share a campus update. We have four overarching goals for W&M this year:

  1. Cultivate a whole-institution mindset at W&M, taking advantage of our unique integration of undergraduate liberal arts and sciences with graduate and professional education
  2. Engage the campus community in strategic planning, delivering a focused plan by fall 2020
  3. Bring our For the Bold campaign across the finish line together (and celebrate!)
  4. Advance W&M’s financial sustainability for the long term

As we pursue these ambitious aims, I am grateful for our community’s passionate and energetic dedication to advancing W&M’s distinctive excellence. I welcome your generative ideas at our open forum tomorrow.

Onward!

Katherine A. Rowe
