Swem water leak

Anna Martin, chair of the emergency managment team, informed the campus community of a water leak in Swem Library on July 3, 2014 - Ed.

Update: 4:53 p.m.

Due to a water leak that has affected cooling in several buildings on campus, including Phi Beta Kappa Hall, tonight's Virginia Shakespeare Festival performance (July 3) has been canceled. Tickets may be exchanged for any of the upcoming performances. For more information, contact the box office at: 757-221-2674.

Update: 4:36 p.m.

The source of the Swem leak has been found and repairs have begun.  The estimated time required to restore cooling to normal levels in the affected buildings is seven hours.

Thank you for your patience, and happy Fourth of July to all.

Anna B. Martin

Update: 11:07 a.m.

Due to a domestic water leak serving the Swem Library, the water to the Library will be shut down at  at 11:15 in order to locate the leak and estimate the time to repair. While domestic water will still be available in buildings other than Swem,  the shut off of water in SWEM will have an impact on the air conditioning in the following buildings: Small, Morton, Jones, PBK and Andrews Hall. ISC 1 and 2 will remain air conditioned for now.

We will provide an update once we have a better estimate of the time it will take to repair the leak and restore water and air conditioning. The loss of cooling in the buildings and the projected temperature for the day may create an uncomfortable environment in these buildings as the day wears on. As this is the case, supervisors should use their discretion as to whether conditions warrant releasing staff early.

Thank you.
