Advice and Considerations

Your personal statement should indicate your specific area of interest.

Your letters of recommendation will be most useful if they are written by scientists or faculty members who can attest to your character and qualifications best suited for our graduate program.

Please review faculty web pages to identify whose work is of most interest to you. Faculty members can be contacted directly via email, phone, or Skype. These conversations are the first step in defining programs of study that best suit your professional goals. We highly encourage you to visit campus and meet with faculty members and/or current graduate students. For information regarding a campus visit, please contact our Graduate Program Coordinator.

Once admitted, all students who are required to submit TOEFL scores are also required to take a brief diagnostic test, called the SPEAK test, to assess your oral communication skills.  Please note that the SPEAK test can only be taken on campus and is administered at the beginning of your first semester at William & Mary.

For additional advice on admissions procedures, please read the Advice memo [pdf] or contact our program.
