Thomas K. Norment, Jr. J.D. '73
A graduate of James Blair High School in Williamsburg, Mr. Norment attended college at Virginia Military Institute (VMI) before returning to Williamsburg to attend the Marshall-Wythe School of Law at William & Mary. In 1987, he was elected to the James City County Board of Supervisors. He served as Chairman of the Board in 1991 before being elected to the Senate of Virginia.
Mr. Norment maintains an active role in the community. He has served as a member of the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation's Board of Trustees and is the only individual to have served as Chairman of the Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation’s Board of Directors more than once. He is on the Hampton Roads Board of Directors of TowneBank and he chairs the Williamsburg Board of TowneBank. Mr. Norment is also a member of the Williamsburg Area Chamber of Commerce and the James City County Ruritan Club. Professionally, he is an attorney with Kaufman and Canoles, P.C..
During his 32 years in the Senate of Virginia, Norment earned a reputation as one of the Commonwealth's most effective legislators. For this reason, he was elected by his colleagues to serve as both Majority and Minority Leader of the Senate Republicans. Mr. Norment now stands as the longest serving Senate Republican Leader and longest serving Republican senator in Virginia's history. As a graduate of public schools and the father of a teacher, he fully understands the need for our Commonwealth to provide a high-quality education to all students. A strong advocate for higher education during his tenure in the Virginia Senate, he has worked tirelessly to ensure our public colleges and universities remain at the top of the national rankings.
