Study Abroad

We strongly encourage our students to take advantage of one of the excellent study abroad programs in Athens or Rome. Students have the unique opportunity to live and breathe among the remains of the Greek and Roman civilization and culture, an experience that profoundly enriches their study of the ancient world. In this page, you will find links to some study abroad programs. If you have questions about these or any other programs, please contact your Major Advisor.

Funding Opportunities

• Hogan Fund: The Department of Classical Studies is able to provide support to students wishing to pursue summer research in areas that relate to the study of the Greco-Roman world. Click here for more information [PDF].
• The Etruscan Foundation offers fellowships for supporting fieldwork and scholarship in Etruscology and its related disciplines.
• The Jane C. Waldbaum Archaeological Field School Scholarship administered by the Archaeological Institute of America.

Summer Travel

• Summer Study in Rome and Pompeii: A Study Abroad Program through the Department of Classical Studies of the College of William and Mary. Get more information.

• American Academy in Rome: Classical Summer School
• American School of Classical Studies at Athens: Summer Session
• College Year in Athens: Summer Courses
• William & Mary Sicily Summer Program, led by William & Mary faculty members.
• Summer program in Bulgaria at the American Research Center in Sofia.  This is a general program in Bulgarian history (in English), but includes archaeology of prehistory and the classical period (of which there is a lot to see in Bulgaria!).

Archaeological Fieldwork Opportunities (listed in no special order)

• American Schools of Oriental Research (ASOR) offer excavation grants to students. In 2011 38 students received scholarships. More information and application instructions.
• Gabii Project. More information and application instructions.
• San Martino Archaeological Field School.
• Mugello Valley Archaeological Project and Poggio Colla Field School.
• Poggio Civitate (Etruscan Studies) Field School.
• The San Felice Archaeological Research Project is the archaeological investigation of a Roman imperial landholding in modern Puglia (ancient Apulia).
• Drew University in Umbria: An archaeological project on the ancient Via Flaminia.

• Hellenic Education & Research Center (HERC): Classics Advanced Semester Program (prerequisite: 1 year of Ancient Greek).
  
• Intercollegiate Center for Classical Studies (Rome) (ICCS)
• Mediterranean Center for Arts and Sciences (MCAS): Semester and Year Long Programs in Classical Studies in Sicily. The Center is affiliated with W&M and also runs the summer abroad program described above.
