James Monroe Scholars Program

James Monroe Scholars are the most academically distinguished undergraduates at the College of William and Mary. They represent approximately the top 7 percent of the student body.

All incoming freshmen are considered for admittance to the program--no additional application is required. Students selected usually graduated in the highest range of their high school classes and present standardized test scores in the top five percent nationally. Other selection criteria include a concern for community, intellectual depth, curiosity, and demonstrated devotion to learning for learning's sake.

Each year, rising sophomores who have outstanding academic records in the freshman year are invited to apply for seats in the Monroe Scholar Program. Once spring grades have been posted, the Charles Center staff send announcements to the home addresses of eligible students. About 100 rising sophomores are invited to apply each year. (Transfer students are not eligible for this program.)

Monroe Scholars enjoy a range of opportunities suited to their abilities and accomplishments. With members of the College faculty and staff, they participate in the Monroe Lunch series of lecture/discussions, gaining exposure to new and different topics in scholarship, courses, programs and careers. They also have access to various resources and may seek special funding for summer research projects.
