Caroline Golino '17 selected as the student speaker for Charter Day

Like many college and university seniors around the nation, Caroline Golino ’17 is anticipating her graduation with both excitement and contemplation.
“My time here at William & Mary has gone by so quickly,” said Golino. “I would say not only did the College help me begin making my goals a reality; it helped me clarify what my goals actually are.”
The New England native and applied mathematics and statistics major will share some of what she’s learned at the university as the student speaker for the 2017 Charter Day Ceremony on Feb. 10 in Kaplan Arena. The annual event brings together students, faculty and alumni to celebrate the signing of the university’s royal charter by King William III and Queen Mary II of England on Feb. 8, 1693.
As the student speaker for the ceremony, Golino plans to convey a cumulative sense of gratitude to W&M from its students for preparing them to go into the professional world so that they may lead nations and industries, develop new technology and to assist in the overall betterment of humankind, she said.
During her time at W&M, Golino took an interest in the university’s computational and applied mathematics and statistic (CAMS) program. She feels that CAMS has prepared her to possibly work in the many fields of mathematical biology such as biostatistics, synthetic biology or theoretical immunology.

“I’m a pre-med student,” she said. “I hadn't really considered doing research as part of my career until I got involved with a biology lab my freshman year. Since then, it's become such an important part of my life that I can't imagine my time here or life after college without it. Being able to take classes in other fields like computer science has allowed me to confirm that I’m really most interested in practicing medicine.”
After graduation, Golino plans on starting her career by working in various clinical settings.
“I'm going to be applying to medical schools like UCLA and Boston University this summer,” she said. “I'm taking a gap year right after graduation so I will be starting in the fall of 2018.”
The keynote speaker for this year’s Charter Day ceremony will be football All-American Michael Clemons ’89. The Charter Day weekend festivities will also include a comedic performance on Feb. 11 by Damon Wayans Jr who has starred in such films as “Let’s Be Cops” and featured on Fox’s “New Girl.” Other Charter Day events include the Athletic Educational Fund (AEF) Lord Botetourt Auction and Alumni Medallion Ceremony.
