Student IRB & Travel

Student IRB

  • If you are working with human subjects in any way, exemption by the Student Institutional Review Board or the Protection of Human Subjects Committee is required UNLESS your research falls under your faculty advisor's exemption through the PHSC. Ask your advisor to be sure before you begin the IRB process. Note that the IRB requires a significant amount of time to complete and requires that both you and your advisor successfully complete an online training module - do not begin it the day of the deadline!
  • Your IRB protocol should be exempted by February 28, 2018. If you do not have exemption by that time explain where you are in the process in the your proposal. If, after reading the information on this page and reviewing the Power Point, you are unsure if you need exemption, email Lindsey Love. When completing the CITI training module, check our how-to guide for more information on the process.
  • If you plan to travel abroad for your research, the Charles Center requires you to purchase insurance for your time abroad. The Global Education Office at the Reves Center strongly recommends that you purchase Cultural Insurance Services International (CISI) insurance. Read more about CISI and how to purchase it from the Reves Center.
  • If you plan to travel to a country which is on the State Department's Travel Warning list, you must petition for approval from the College under the W&M Travel Warning Policy. Petitions for summer 2018 Charles Center-funded travel/research/internship in a country under a Travel Warning must be received by Nick Vasquez, International Travel and Security Manager, by 5:00 pm on April 14, 2018See this page for details and plan to submit your petition prior to the February 28 Charles Center deadline.
