The Annual Symposium for Pilgrimage Studies is pleased to have Prof. Ian Rutherford as our plenary speaker for 2013. Prof. Rutherford (PhD Oxford University) teaches in the Classics Dept. at Reading, England. In 2013-4 he is a visiting research scholar at the Institute for the Study of the Ancient World (ISAW) in New York. He has published widely on ancient Greek poetry and religion, particularly on pilgrimage and religious travel. He is the author of "State-Pilgrims and Sacred Observers. A Study of Theoria and Theoroi" (Cambridge University Press, 2013). He is also interested in the interrelations between Greece and the other ancient cultures of Western Asia and North Africa (including Egypt), and his current project is a book exploring how our picture of ancient Greek religion has been changed by recent advances in the understanding of the religious systems of early Anatolian cultures, such as the Hittites.
