Background

At the introductory level, Professor Linneman teaches Principles of Sociology. At the sophomore/junior level, he teaches Quantitative Research Methods and a course called Social Movements and Social Change. At the senior level, he teaches a seminar on sexualities. He served as chair of the Sociology Department from 2006 to 2011, and as the College’s Faculty Director of Advising from 2017 to 2022.  He currently serves as faculty advisor to Mosaic House, a living-learning community on campus.  He is the author of Weathering Change: Gays and Lesbians, Christian Conservatives, and Everyday Hostilities, published by New York University Press. He is also the author of Social Statistics: Managing Data, Conducting Analyses, Presenting Results, published by Routledge.  The fifth edition of this book will be released in 2025.  He also has published in the journals Gender & Society, Sociological Perspectives, Men & Masculinities, Sexuality Research and Social Policy, American Journal of Sociology, Contemporary Sociology, and Teaching Sociology. His article in Gender & Society, entitled “Gender in Jeopardy! Intonation Variation on a Television Game Show,” investigated the sociolinguistic phenomenon of uptalk.  This research was featured in The New York Times, The Boston Globe, The Smithsonian Magazine, Bloomberg Businessweek, Discovery Channel News, Wired, GQ, Women’s Health, National Public Radio’s With Good Reason, and Fox News.
