Mengxia Zhang

Volunteer Teacher

Mengxia Zhang (张萌夏)joined the Confucius Institute at the College of William and Mary as a volunteer teacher in January 2016. She is currently a graduate student at Beijing Normal University majoring in Musicology, specializing in playing and teaching traditional Chinese musical instruments, specifically the pipa and ruan. From 2013 to 2015, she worked as a pipa teacher at the primary school attached to Beijing University of Science and Technology. She won first place in many competitions at home and abroad, including the silver award in the “Ninth China-Singapore International Music Competition in China”, 2014; the gold award in Liaoyuan International Pipa Competition, 2012; the gold award in the “Chinese Youth Art Festival”, 2012; the gold award in "Harmonious Culture in China - The Fifth National Youth Art Selection Activities", 2011;  and many more. Mengxia has also participated in numerous international exchanges. In 2011, she participated in a Confucius Institute Performance Tour organized by Hanban as a soloist in Denmark and Sweden. As a member of the BNU student art group, she often took part in televised programs for CCTV such as “Graduation Song”, “Feng Hua Guo Yue”, and more.
