August 23, 2021 | Commencement Announcement
Dear W&M Class of 2022,
We look forward to welcoming many of you back to campus in the coming weeks! Today we write with news about your Commencement ceremony in May. Due to the increasing number of graduates over the past several years, the Commencement Policy Committee has recommended that we hold two graduation ceremonies beginning with the Class of 2022: one for undergraduates (bachelor’s) and one for graduate students (masters, doctoral, etc.). Among other benefits, this will allow for additional guest tickets for each graduate.
The undergraduate ceremony (bachelor’s) will be Friday, May 20 at 7:00 p.m. in Zable Stadium. The graduate ceremony will be Saturday, May 21 at 9:30 a.m. in Zable Stadium.
Our goal is for each ceremony to be similar, but with a few key differences. The President will preside over both ceremonies, and we intend for each ceremony to share the same keynote speaker. However, the ceremonies will have different student speakers and will recognize recipients of different Commencement awards as appropriate.
Due to the larger size of the undergraduate ceremony, undergrads will be recognized by degree group/major at the main ceremony, and then individually recognized at departmental ceremonies where they will receive their diploma. The smaller size of the graduate ceremony will allow for participating graduate students to be recognized individually at the main ceremony.
We will release the departmental ceremony schedule in January, 2022. In the meantime, see the Commencement website for the current schedule with info on the timing of the main ceremonies and other traditional Commencement events.
We hope you are as excited about your Commencement as we are! If the info on the website doesn’t answer questions you may have, please contact us at [[commencement]] and we will get back to you.
