The circular opening high up in a pine tells scientists that this is the home of a red-cockaded woodpecker; other woodpecker species carve different-shaped openings. Red-cockadeds are also pickier about their home sites than most other species. The birds use a cavity for a number of years, then abandon it for reasons yet unknown, seeking out a new nest site in another tree.
