Elizabeth Miller has been involved with community engagement at William & Mary since she arrived as a student and Sharpe Scholar in 2007. She graduated with a degree in women’s studies and a minor in sociology after four years of learning how to connect her academic interests in inequality, identity, and systems of power with her values and actions. As a student, Elizabeth experienced adventure, friendship, scholarship, struggles, moments of learning and a deep sense of empowerment.
In her current role as associate director in W&M’s Civic & Community Engagement, Elizabeth has primary responsibility for the Civic Leadership Program, local community partnerships and student-community funding. She also co-instructs the Women in Leadership course offered through the Gender, Sexuality, and Women’s Studies department. Woven through all of these efforts is her investment in students understanding their role in community, particularly the Williamsburg area. Elizabeth says her work is about active citizenship, but her commitment to community extends beyond her job, as she hosts dinner dialogues around her dining room table, fosters kittens for the humane society, and supports the local library by racking up overdue fines.
