Course Information

This course is only open to students at the College of William & Mary. The course will be filled on a first-come, first-serve basis and is based on each student's application. We want to make sure that students accepted into the course are truly interested in becoming certified as personal trainers after completion of the course and will be committed to the course throughout the entire 12 weeks. Those students who are not interested in employment with W&M Campus Recreation or who are seniors could be placed on a waiting list.

There is a cost of $150.00 that covers all course materials, a CPR/AED certification and class handouts. All participants will also receive a 20% discount on the ACSM Certified Personal Trainer exam. The $150.00 is due the first day of class, Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2019. Those who have not paid for the course by Jan. 16 will lose their spot in the course to someone on the waiting list. Course participants who do not show up on the first day of class will also lose their spot in the course to someone on the waiting list.

What happens at the end of the program?

At the end of the spring semester, all members of the training course will be prepared to take ACSM's Certified Personal Trainer Exam. Participants will be evaluated practically and will take an in-house written exam. Participants must pass both the practical evaluations and the written exam in order to pass the course and receive a certificate.

How do I gain employment as a Personal Trainer for W&M Campus Recreation?

The Personal Training Course in mandatory for all W&M Campus Rec Personal Trainers, whether they take it before or after coming on staff. Personal Trainer hiring takes place every fall and those students hired go through the training course in the spring. If more Trainers are needed after the fall hiring, a smaller spring hiring will be organized, open only to the students currently in the Personal Training Course.

Check out the ACSM website for more information about their national certifications and training materials.
