Protecting W&M Email Addresses

Spam bots may feast on emails found in webpages but we’ve got a helpful trick in Cascade to help hide ours. If the editor surrounds the username with square brackets, for example [[tgriffin]], bots only see “useless” text inside brackets and crawl away. Browsers on the other hand will convert the username into a functional @wm.edu email link, in this case tgriffin@wm.edu.

If you prefer your email link to be a proper name or phrase enter a comma and the desired link text after the username, for example [[tgriffin,The Griffin]]. This is converted in your page to the functional email link The Griffin.

The same trick works for @vims.edu, @mason.edu and others — just include a v| or m| in front of the username in the double brackets.

Further details are available in the Cascade help pages. This also works in W&M Events!
