Earth Day Festival Moved Online!
Due to stay-home orders, the Earth Week committee has decided to move Earth Week celebrations online. Earth Day events will now take place throughout the week of April 19, to engage the campus and Williamsburg communities with exciting events every day!

The Tradition of Reading of Lorax will continue! 
Every year at Earth Day Festival, the President or Provost will read the Lorax to the public. We will be live-streaming the reading of Lorax by our Provost, Peggy Agouris, on April 25, 2020! Access the stream via YouTube (link below).

Monday, April 20

11:00 AM Nature as Meditation In this 15 min W&M Wellness Center class with instructor Martha Rouleau, allow the beauty of nature to bring you into a peaceful meditation.

12:00 PM Batten Hour with Sara Hughes Join us for a special Earth Day Batten hour from UVA’s Batten School of Leadership and Public Policy, as we hear from Sara Hughes, author of Repowering Cities. City governments are rapidly becoming society's problem solvers. Tune in as Hughes discusses the policy agendas city governments develop for reducing GHG emissions and the governing strategies they use to implement these agendas. Register with the link.

8:00 PM Candlelight Vinyasa Yoga Experience a relaxing combination of yoga poses and intentional breathing in this 60 minW&M Wellness Center yoga session with instructor Kate.

12:00 PM Vinyasa Yoga This 1 hrW&M Wellness Center yoga class with instructor Cindy uses Vinyasa, a yoga technique that pairs traditional yoga poses with breathing techniques designed to build internal heat. Intermediate level yoga.

1:00 PM LNT Series: Principles 1 & 2 In the second installment of W&M Outdoor Recreation’s series on “Leave No Trace,” learn about the first two principles of LNT, Plan ahead & prepare” and “travel & camp on durable surfaces.” 

4:00 PM David Billstrom/ Kitsbow Discussion This discussion is led by Mr. Bilstrom, the CEO of an outdoor equipment company who, in light of COVID-19, pivoted his factory to manufacturing medical supplies. In this discussion we’'ll discuss how we can make decisions as active citizens to prioritize community in these circumstances. 

6:00 PM Discovery Lab: Our Coast In this activity hosted by the VIMS, take a journey with VIMS graduate student, Amanda Guthrie,  along our coast- it’s biodiversity, geology, the physical processes that work to create and reshape the coastline, and how we can help protect these valuable habitats. This talk is designed for youth and families, but all ages are welcome!

8:00 AM Wake-up Yoga Wake-Up with instructor Patti in this 45 minute W&M Wellness Center yoga session.

11:00 AM Nature as Meditation In this 15 minute meditation with Martha Rouleau from the W&M Wellness Center, you can experience all the relaxation nature has to offer. 

12:00 PM Drawing for Wellness In this 60 min W&M Wellness Center class with instructor and art therapist, Sarah, you can get creative and enjoy the mindful qualities of drawing. Bring any drawing supplies you have available!

12:00 PM National Stormwater Center’s Student Stormwater Certification Course Register and join this course hosted by Radford University. The Certified Stormwater Student course specifically examines the Clean Water Act and NPDES permits with a focus on MS4 permits. The course additionally provides students with training on illicit discharges, where to look for them, and how to report them. Students will receive a Certified Stormwater Student Certificate upon completion of the class. This course can be used to build a resume that demonstrates interest, commitment, and knowledge of stormwater and environmental regulations. 1:00 PM Groundwater Challenges Lecture The UVA Global Water Initiative invites you to join this talk with Professor Sharon Megdal, Director of the Water Resources Research Center at the University of Arizona. The presentation will highlight some of the challenges associated with analysis of groundwater governance and management where authorities are decentralized and governance practices are evolving. 1:00 PM LNT Series: Principles 5 & 6 In the fourth installment of W&M Outdoor Recreation’s series on “Leave No Trace,” learn about to more principles of LNT, “Minimize Campfire Effect” and “Respect Wildlife.” 

3:00 PM Qigong  Similar to yoga, this qigong class involves moving meditation. In this 30 min W&M Wellness Center class with instructor Stan, wear clothes that are loose enough for easy movement and flat shoes or bare feet. You don't need anything else!

Friday, April 24

12:00 PM Yin Yang In this 60 min W&M Wellness Center class with instructor Patti learn the balance of the Yang and the Yin. The class begins with the meditative practice of Yin, getting deeper into the connective tissues. Then the class will move into a gentle practice of Yang to work the muscles in the body.

1:00 PM Intro to Leave No Trace In the fifth and final installment of W&M Outdoor Recreation’s series on “Leave No Trace,” learn about the final principle of LNT, “Be Considerate of Others,” and learn the “Theory of Resource.”  

2:00 PM Eco Art Contemplate the environment while creating art inspired by natural elements in this W&M Wellness Center class with instructor Sarah. Let's celebrate the Earth through art making. All are welcome to learn about Eco-Art, which is art making focused on the environment. In this virtual class we will learn how to make art with natural materials and create our own balancing stone sculpture. Feel free to bring rocks, stones, or shells from your yard and no art experience necessary!
