Study Abroad Student Advisory Board

The purpose of the Study Abroad Student Advisory Board (SASAB) is to support the Global Education Office in ways that promote student awareness of study abroad experiences and increase student preparation, helping students maximize their opportunities before, during, and after their time abroad.

SASAB has three main goals.

Goal 1: Marketing and Promotion

SASAB will assist the GEO in being a public face of study abroad at William & Mary, presenting to students in classes, the Study Abroad Fair, information sessions with freshman halls or student organizations, and other ways of sharing the value SASAB members have found while abroad. It will also research what W&M students want out of study abroad and how to better connect study abroad to specific disciplines and majors. In this way the board will help mediate between students and the GEO, providing the GEO with information about student needs and preferences to help set future programs and simultaneously helping students become aware of existing study abroad opportunities.

Goal 2: Advising and Consulting

SASAB will research pre-departure best practices and work with the GEO in assessing current preparation resources, including handbooks and the Global Education website, as well as student feedback. This knowledge will be used to improve the preparation process for W&M students who study abroad.

Goal 3: Engaging and Transitioning
SASAB will provide opportunities for students who have already studied abroad to share their experiences and the lessons they have learned, and to provide outlets for students currently studying abroad to share thoughts and experiences on experiences they are having. In this, the board will enable conversation between W&M students at all stages of their abroad experiences.

Members of the SASAB receive special opportunities to share their thoughts and experiences from their time abroad, and to help connect their peers to the amazing opportunities that W&M students have access to throughout the world. SASAB membership allows returning students to keep study abroad an active aspect of their lives at William & Mary.
