Dear students,

Following up to former President Reveley’s message, Vice Provost Teresa Longo and I want to personally reach out to you and let you know that we are here to support you. We heard your concerns and questions at the event on Friday and we stand by you.

As we said Friday, W&M will be working with the Virginia state government to understand the changes. This will take some time as there are still many unanswered questions at the federal level and we don’t yet know what the courts or Congress will do.  At the same time, we continue to advocate for you. Accordingly, we also want to reiterate several points that were made at our DACA meeting with former President Reveley last spring and are stated on our website

  • Student information, including information about citizenship and immigration status, is protected under FERPA (Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act). W&M does not provide information about the immigration status of its students, faculty or staff unlessrequired to do so by law.
  • The W&M Police Department does not inquire about a person’s immigration status in the course of its work. Additionally,If ICE notifies W&M of an investigation and requests assistance, William & Mary Police do not provide protected student information about residence hall assignments, class schedules or other individualized information. Nor does the William & Mary Police Department participate in the investigation. The W&M Police Department  subscribes to the position of the International Association of Campus Law Enforcement Administrators that our “mission is to serve the campus community and protect our students, staff, and faculty of every heritage, ethnicity, religion, and country while they are on our campus.

If any of you need to talk, feel free to contact us or the Counseling Center. I reached out to them and they invite you to come for walk-in appointments even if you don’t have a scheduled appointment. Additionally, we are working on scheduling a meeting for you this week.

Hang in there. You are members of the W&M family. You are not alone.
