2023-24 Room Selection

William & Mary is poised to begin an exciting Housing and Dining Comprehensive Facilities Plan to modernize and revitalize our residential and dining facilities. Over the next 10 years, we will completely renovate or replace 80% of our residence halls, providing housing that is worthy of current and future W&M students. By fall of 2025 we will be adding 900 new beds and more than 400 renovated beds to our inventory!

The comprehensive plan will have a rolling impact on housing capacity over the years, and we anticipate pinch points over the horizon. Some adjustments to our room selection process will be necessary in the near term, and we understand those adjustments will be inconvenient. Know that we will support our students and the community through each phase of the facilities plan.

GENERAL DATES & DEADLINES

  • December 7, 2022, 3:00 p.m. - Room Selection Information Session will provide an overview of the process and include time for Q&A.
  • January 30, 2023 -  The 2023-24 Housing Application and Contract will go live
  • February 14, 2023, 5:00 p.m. - Housing Contract in the 2023-24 Housing Application must be signed to be eligible for on campus housing on campus
  • February 21, 2023 – Room Selection begins (2023 Room Selection Calendar)

APPLICATION DETAILS

All students who wish to live on campus next year must sign a Housing Contract in the 2023-24 Housing Application by 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, February 14, 2023, deadline to have the best opportunity of receiving a regular room selection time slot. Time slots during Traditional Room Selection Week will be based upon high school graduation year.

Students who sign a Housing Contract in the 2023-24 Housing Application after the 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, February 14 deadline may be assigned a bed space by Residence Life staff if there is not an active housing wait list. If there is an active housing wait list at the time a student signs the Housing Contract, they will be placed on the wait list. Those who signed their contract after the deadline will be added to the wait list behind those who met the initial contract deadline.

ROOM SELECTION DETAILS

Rising seniors approved for housing will be the first to choose their rooms, followed by approved rising juniors, then rising sophomores. A student’s designated room selection day/time slot is determined by high school graduation year, not social class nor credit hour academic standing.

WAIT LIST DETAILS

W&M manages a wait list for on-campus housing every year – it is something we anticipate and are prepared to handle. Please see the W&M Housing Wait List page for more information on the wait list process. With the closure of Yates and Monroe Halls for the 2023-24 Academic Year, we anticipate a housing wait list of potentially 400-500 students. While we cannot guarantee that all students initially placed on the housing wait list will eventually be offered on-campus housing, in past years we have been able to house all students who actively remained on the wait list, including Fall 2022.

OFF-CAMPUS HOUSING FAIRS

We want to provide support and information to our rising junior and senior students as they consider housing options for next year. We have scheduled several off-campus housing fairs for students who are not required to live on campus. Our goal is to connect students with property managers and related campus services.

Off-Campus Housing Fairs

  • November 11, 2022 between 11:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. at the Sadler Center
  • February 3, 2023 between 11:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. at the Sadler Center, in Chesapeake Rooms A&B
  • February 22, 2023 between 11:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. at the Sadler Center, in Chesapeake Rooms A&B

NEW FOR 2023-24 ROOM SELECTION

  • Monroe Hall will close for a full renovation and is scheduled to reopen in fall 2024.
  • Yates Hall – With the W&M Board of Visitors November decision to move forward with Phase 1 of the Housing & Dining Comprehensive Facilities Plan, Yates Hall will permanently close at the end of the 2022-23 academic year.
  • Dawson & DuPont Halls will house freshmen for 2023-24.
  • Same Room Sign Up – With hall closures resulting in fewer bed spaces available for the 2023-24 Academic Year, the Same Room Sign Up process is being temporarily paused to ensure that we have enough space to accommodate the two-year residency requirement. Same Room Sign Up will not be offered for the 2023-24 Returning Student Room Selection Process. We look forward to returning to this practice in future years.
  • Commuter Contract Release will be extended to 60 driving miles from campus.
  • Colonial Williamsburg House - At the end of this academic year (May 2023), Colonial Williamsburg will be ending the lease for the William Randolph Lodging (Colonial Williamsburg House) with the University.   Due to space needs and exhibit changes, Colonial Williamsburg needs the building for another purpose in the upcoming year.  This means that the Colonial Williamsburg House program offered through Residence Life will pause at this time. Unfortunately, Colonial Williamsburg has few properties that are sized appropriately for the CW House program and all of them are under lease at this time.  If something becomes available in the future, CW is interested in continuing the program and partnership at that time. Our thanks to all the past residents of the CW House for making this such a special program and for sharing their lives as students in the middle of Colonial Williamsburg.

ADDITIONAL DETAILS

Religious Accommodation Housing - Requests for religious housing accommodations are considered on a case-by-case basis according to documented need. Requests must be submitted to the Dean of Students Office by Monday, February 6, 2023.

Gender-Inclusive Housing – Residence Life is committed to offering gender-inclusive housing options to ensure inclusive communities. Residence Life offers gender housing preference options for students to meet individual needs.

We look forward to having you live on campus with us next year!

Steps for Housing Application
Who's Eligible?

You must be a currently enrolled, full-time undergraduate or graduate student for the spring 2023 semester or be readmitted for the fall 2023 semester to be able to apply for housing (contact the Dean of Students office regarding readmission).

Step 1: Complete and submit your online Housing Contract

Housing contracts will be available online beginning January 30, 2023.

Complete a 2023-24 Housing Application & Contract by 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, February 14, 2023:

  • All students who wish to live on campus next year must sign a Housing Contract in the 2023-24 Housing Application by 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, February 14, 2023, deadline to have the best opportunity of receiving a regular room selection time slot. Time slots during Traditional Room Selection Week will be based upon high school graduation year.
  • Students who sign a Housing Contract in the 2023-24 Housing Application after the 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, February 14 deadline may be assigned a bed space by Residence Life staff if there is not an active housing wait list. If there is an active housing wait list at the time a student signs the Housing Contract, they will be placed on the wait list. Those who signed their contract after the deadline will be added to the wait list behind those who met the initial contract deadline.

By signing the housing contract you are committing to pay for on campus housing for the full 2023-24 academic year. This means you commit before you know your specific room assignment. Please review the contract carefully, including the limited cancellation policies. This is a legally binding document.

Step 2: Prepare for Selection

Many factors will come into play as you prepare to complete the room selection process. Take some time to consider your plans including selecting your roommate(s) (single rooms are limited), research your rooming options, learn about self-assignment time slots, and how a variety of factors may affect your final rooming selection.

Step 3: Online Room Selection

Learn what to expect from online room selection before the beginning of your time slot.
