Breaks, Moving In & Out

A student’s life at William & Mary is one of constant transition, fresh starts, sad goodbyes and joyful reunions. Our freshmen leave home and the familiar comfort of friends, family and their own space to face the fresh challenges and opportunity that college brings. Transfer students shift gears from one college environment to another, also leaving old friends and familiar places. For all students at William & Mary, each year brings the promise of something new, something different and something unknown. And by the time you are ready to leave for the summer, you will be wondering where all the time went, saying some tearful goodbyes and looking forward to doing it all again. Unless you are graduating, but that is a transition of an entirely different order!

Transitions can be stressful.

When you are packing to come to campus for the first time there are many questions: what do I bring? Will my roommate like me? What is a loft? Is there room for all my stuff? What do you mean I have to do my own laundry? and does Dominos deliver?

Before you know it you will be making plans for breaks, whether it is Fall, Thanksgiving, Winter or Spring. These all have their own stressors and questions to be answered: What if they did convert my room to an exercise room at home? Will I still like my old friends and will they like me? When should I plan my flight home? Where should I take my service trip? Where did this extra weight come from?

Then, at the end of the year, moving out means other stressors: Where did all this extra stuff come from and how do I get it into that tiny car? Exactly how clean? When do I have to leave?  And OMG, how long has that pizza been under my bed?

We can’t answer all of your questions; but we can help with some information to help you plan this year’s transitions. And if you can’t find an answer, ask us and we’ll be happy to help.
