Our History
- 1975: Lynn Briley, Janet Brown Strafer and Karen Ely broke barriers at William & Mary when they became the first African American undergraduate students to live in the residential halls between 1967-1971. In response to supporting and serving the needs of Black students, the Office of Minority Affairs was established under the direction of Dr. Leory Moore. At the time, the office was focused on retention of black students matriculating at the university.
- 2021: William & Mary’s Asian Centennial celebrates the 100th anniversary of the admission of the university’s first student from Asia, Pu-Kao Chen (Class of 1923), as well as all students of Asian, Pacific Islander and Middle Eastern/Southwest Asian descent who followed. The commemoration began in fall 2021 and presented myriad special events. It also brought to campus three Asian Centennial Arts Fellows and launched the Asian Pacific Middle Eastern Research Project.
