RIDES provides non-emergency medical transportation to seniors 55 and older and the disabled of any age regardless of their income in the Greater Williamsburg Area. Limited transportation is available to Richmond and the Lower Peninsula.
Volunteers are crucial to the success of the RIDES program. Volunteers may drive their own vehicles or those belonging to the RIDES program. Some volunteers choose a fixed schedule per week or month while others serve as back up drivers. All volunteers must consent to a background check and attend a Volunteer Orientation session. •Must be at least 21 years of age. •Must be in good physical and emotional condition. •Volunteers-owned vehicles must have clean interiors and be in good working order, including current inspection sticker. •Must have current driver's license, good driving record, and auto insurance. All volunteers must have minimum coverage required by state law and must prove it to RIDES •Must be reliable, punctual and well groomed. Casual attire is acceptable. •Must have good driving record and pass criminal background check. Volunteers determine their availability and the amount of time they wish to commit to the program. Each volunteer chooses the capacity in which he or she is going to participate. Every individual's commitment is beneficial to the success of the program. Volunteers will be contacted to provide RIDES transportation only for the days and times that they have provided to RIDES staff, except in emergencies. The RIDES program especially needs volunteers who will commit to a block schedule; that is, the volunteer agrees to drive at the same time every week or month. For example, a driver might sign up to volunteer every Thursday afternoon, or every other Wednesday morning. Volunteers who commit to a block schedule help ensure that every client receives transportation to every medical appointment.
